McComb, Mississippi:

The Oral History Project

The journey will not be easy but must be grounded in a sincere search for truth.

In the summer of 2004, we began an oral history project focusing on the civil rights history of the McComb area. The project is coordinated by staff at the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation, from the University of Mississippi, in conjunction with Jackie Martin of the McComb Mayor's Office.

On January 17, 2005, the McComb community held a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day commemoration, focusing on the civil rights history of McComb, the contributions of local people, and a lively discussion about the past, present, and future of race relations in the area. On program was a short video piece with some of McComb's civil rights history, including clips from the oral history interviews.
